Sir Alex Ferguson insists Manchester United are ready to end out of his race of champions at the hands of the German clubs, as Premier League leaders prepare to face Schalke in the semi-finals first leg of the season on Tuesday. Side of Ferguson suffered defeats in the tie against Bayern Munich (twice), Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen in recent memory, with the last two both ending dream of Champions League at the semifinal stage, in 1997 and 2002 respectively.
More recently, Bayern knocked United out of competition of the previous season on the road to the final, triumphing in goals after winning 2-1 in Munich and losing 3-2 at Old Trafford. Together, of course, also have defeated good memories from before the opposition German have beaten Bayern in dramatic circumstances in the final, while 1999 also to Wolfsburg home and away last season. And Ferguson believes United are fully equipped to exorcise his demons German knockout when they line against Schalke's Ralf Ragnick at the Veltins Arena on Tuesday.
"We have not had a great record against Bayern since the season 99." "We called two times in the group stage and defeated them in the final," said Ferguson. "We were very unlucky against Bayer Leverkusen, we should have been and we were very unlucky against Dortmund but it may not always be bad luck, and sometimes will change for you." The German teams have always had the strength and determination about them and it will be exactly the same on Tuesday night.
"We are going into this game with much more experience we have in the past and our record away from home in recent years has been terrific." Schalke line will be led by the three time winner of the cup of Europe Raul, who recently revealed that United were interested in his services when his time at Real Madrid was coming to an end last summer.
And Ferguson confirmed that had considered signing front veteran of Spain, which is the scorer of the Laague of champions of the Champions League with 71 goals. "We talked to his agent or he spoke them of his agent and we were a little tempted because he said to himself ' is not too old that he may not score a goal in the Premier League," Ferguson said. "His real time had come to an end after a fantastic race but players as always that find some ambition, not just fade away, and at his age had many things to do, much to offer."
"It would have been [a Henrik Larsson-type signature]." You'll get opportunities to experience as well as we did with Michael Owen and Michael Owen has been a fantastic professional here. That they add value to the team, experience, and I think if I have Michael Owen might have been tempted. "Raul is Raul and you have to be careful in the last third of the field because he still has the intelligence and a record of objective fantastic." His 71 in the Champions League? "Hell bloody, hope to keep it this way during the next three weeks".
