Marseille grabbed victory in the final of the League Cup as Taye Taiwo scored the only goal 10 minutes from time.
After a tight contest, Taiwo broke hearts of Montpellier when he was home the rebound after Laurent Pionnier could only half-clear shot of Benoit Cheyrou free.
It meant that om successfully defended the Cup and will increase the confidence in the camp which now can continue and do the same in the French Ligue 1.
Marseille enjoyed the better of the game, but didn't have all his own way and it would have been fearing extension at a stage of the season.
Cheyrou had the first chance of the game, but they fired directly into the veteran Pionnier, who was chosen ahead of regular Geoffrey Jourdren, Rene Girard had rewarded the former captain for his performances in the Cup this season.
Moments later, Pionnier was in action again, punching clear Lucho González free shot.
Montpellier, then had a chance when Gabriel Heinze fluffed his clearance, but Jamelle Saihi saw his well close range shot blocked by Steve Mandanda.
Marseille was the closest to breaking the deadlock before the break when Mathieu Valbuena broke into the area, but he saw that his powerful shot back in the post.
The champions were on the attack early in the second half, but Pionnier made a fine save to deny Ayew, who turned to wide from a corner 10 minutes later.
But for the majority of the half Montpellier gave as they arrived and tensions rose as the marked time in.
But it was shown that there is no need for time extra as Taiwo smashed home from close range.
